Alcis’ results for Afghanistan’s winter cycle agriculture provided below are generated from sophisticated machine learning models run against a very large stack of multi-resolution, multi-dated satellite images repeatedly collected across all agricultural land in Afghanistan.

The total area of active agriculture for the last three winter cycles across Afghanistan were as follows, showing a significant reduction of just over 20% in agriculture in the 2023 to 2024 winter cycle:
2021 to 2022: 1,364,480 ha
2022 to 2023: 1,400,658 ha
2023 to 2024: 1,125,703 ha
Wheat Cultivation
The total area of wheat cultivation for the last three winter cycles across Afghanistan were as follows. The data shows a significant increase of just over 20% in wheat cultivation in the 2022 to 2023 winter cycle, explained by the shift to wheat in response to the Taliban’s ban on opium poppy cultivation. The data shows a significant decrease in wheat cultivation in the 2023 to 2024 winter cycle.

Opium Poppy Cultivation
The total area of opium poppy cultivation for the last three winter cycles across Afghanistan were as follows. The data shows the dramatic decrease in opium poppy cultivation in the 2022 to 2023 winter cycle and a further significant decrease in opium poppy cultivation in the 2023 to 2024 winter cycle.
